Mark your calendars for the August Summer Enrichment Lecture Series.  Join in the conversation in Duntreath Hall on Wednesdays:
August 7, 14, and 21 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. 

We will be examining the history of the right to bear arms in our country, the dynamics of violence in the Bible, and completing our series with a faithful response as Christians to this issue that makes our news almost daily. As we have done in the past, this will be a balanced engagement, with perspectives from different points of view. We hope you will invite family, friends, and neighbors to series.

Wednesday, August 7  Exploring the 2nd Amendment – Lauren C. Bell, Professor of Political Science and Dean of Academic Affairs, Randolph Macon College. 
Professor Bell is a former American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow (1997-98) on the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary and a former United States Supreme Court fellow (2006-07) at the United States Sentencing Commission in Washington, DC.

Wednesday, August 14 – The use of violent force in the Bible – Samuel L. Adams, Professor of Old Testament, Union Presbyterian Seminary.  
Dr. Adams’ interests include the Wisdom literature of the Bible and beyond, wealth and poverty in the biblical world, apocalypticism, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Egyptology, biblical theology, and the Bible and film. He published the monograph, Social and Economic Life in Second Temple Judea (Westminster John Knox, 2014). As an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), he has served churches in New Haven, CT, Chicago, IL, and in Richmond, VA. He is also a regular blogger for the Huffington Post.

Wednesday, August 21 – What You Need to Know about Gun Violence – James “Jim” Atwood.
Jim is a frequent preacher, speaker at seminars, ecumenical and educational events throughout the country working daily for reasonable gun laws such as background checks for all guns sold, banning assault weapons, and keeping guns out of the hands of those who are a danger to themselves and others. He has also been an avid deer hunter for over 50 years.  Jim holds A B. S. degree in education from Florida State University; Master of Divinity Degree from Union Theological Seminary of Virginia, a Master of Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from McCormick Theological Seminary of Chicago.

Childcare will be provided beginning at 5:45 p.m.
